SONY PlayStation 3 HDD 320GB Console - Classic White (Japan Model) Review

-By far the coolest looking of all PS3 models currently available. Hardware wise this is the same PS3 you know and love, with only a couple differences. First this is ONLY available in Japan and Asian regions respectively. Second for those that live outside the region it may also be noted that X is O, which means you use O to confirm and X to cancel. Third DVD playback is restricted to the region from where the console is brought from, which means if you buy a Japanese model you have to use R2 DVD's for playback or R3 DVD's if you buy anywhere outside of Japan. Blu-ray however is the same as in the U.S. since its region A. (PAL users should opt for a HK model as PAL is used in the HK region.) Last but not least power usage and voltage: If you live in the U.S. buy the Japanese model since Japan use 100-110v, which will work with any American outlet. For European and Australian users, use should consider buying the Hong Kong or Korean version of the console since they are rated with 220-240v rating.

DVD - Region 2 (Japan), Region 3 (Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, etc)

Blu-ray - Region A (Disappointment for EU users)

Control Scheme - X is O in Japan and Asia. X=Cancel O=Confirm

Voltage - Japan (100-110v) Asian (220-240v). **If your region does not match the power rating of the console you will have to buy a transformer or converter w/ the correct plug port in order to use the machine in your region.**

CowboyStudio 750 Watt Premium Photo Studio Reflector Umbrella Boom Lighting Kit Review

Hello. We were struggling with lighting for our Youtube TV station. We had lots of dead spots and had to work massive color correction in post to get rid of all kinds of issues w/r/t lighting (or lack of). That was only marginally successful (see BEFORE video below). So we went looking for a lighting kit and ran into this one which had the overhead light and two direct lights. We were VERY reluctant to buy this kit because it seemed like so much for a great price. How could it be quality? I was VERY surprised to see pretty darn good build quality and stable stands. The stands aren't the beefiness of my SLIK tripods, but hey, pretty darn good!

The lights are halogen and do an amazing job of providing a warm, bright image to the video which just wasn't possible before no matter what we did with various lights (household) to try and compensate for. We were also thrilled about how small a footprint the lights pack down into (very important since we are headed to Costa Rica and space is everything in bags).

In our setup we choose to use the overhead light pointing "up' at the ceiling (I know that's backwards) but it produced a really nice warm drape over the entire video as a result without making things pop out to heavy on the lighting.

Well enough words. Here's the lights in action. Before is with no kit. After is with THIS actual kit.

Sealife DC1000 10 Megapixel Underwater / Land Camera in Removable Housing with 5X Optical Zoom (Black) Review

For a trip to the Yucatan, I purchased the SeaLife DC1000 with single flash unit, as we anticipated diving, and also a Canon D10 to allow more options while snorkeling. The DC1000 has some nice features (push-button controls are generally easy to use underwater) and comes at a reasonable price for a dive-capable camera for those of us that have limited chances to do photography with scuba. In general, the camera worked well and took some nice pictures while diving at 50 feet using the flash, which is essential under these conditions. As noted by the prior review, however, its performance for shallow-water snorkeling could have been substantially better. I initially had problems with the flash under these conditions, which frequently overwhelmed the image. After regular adjustment of the power, flash pictures worked better, but this means that one-chance shots (e.g., fish) may be lost. There are other adjustment options for the flash (macro vs. long-distance settings) that I did not have a chance to try, which may improve results, but the amount of adjusting to get a good flash result is frustrating given that the flash is supposed to be integrated into the camera system. Because of the erratic flash results I was getting, I also explored alternative non-flash modes. This revealed the biggest negative of the camera--the "special" underwater color bias settings seem to function by just adding varying levels of red to everything, whether the objects are red or not. After it became obvious that the underwater settings were generating unacceptable results, I started instead taking pictures underwater with the land setting, which of course creates images that are more blue than natural due to long-wavelength light attenuation. After returning home, I explored whether I could salvage some of the images using Photoshop. This helped to a limited extent for the shots taken in the underwater setting, but the excess red could not be entirely eliminated. In contrast, when color balance/contrast filtering was applied to shots taken with the standard land setting, the resulting image colors were excellent and true to life. So in the end, the special underwater adjustment features seem more of a sales gimmick that will send unsuspecting users astray rather than a strong selling point. In the future, SeaLife should consider teaming up with Adobe to come up with a quality image filter algorithm. An option that I did not try was to manually set the white balance using the included white board (another thing to hold onto in the water...)--this might fix the problem. Other negatives to the camera were an annoying delayed response when trying to change zoom settings, and a very slow focus/shutter response resulting in missed pictures. As I used the camera more, it seemed to me that the photo was taken when I released the button rather than when I initially depressed it as one would expect in other cameras.

So how did it compare to the Canon D10 performance? Without the fancy underwater settings, the Canon took expected blue-biased photos that, when filtered through the contrast/color balance filters of Photoshop produced excellent, vivid, true to life shots. In general, the image sharpness of the D10 was slightly better than the DS1000, as perhaps might be expected when using a product from a top-tier camera company. Bottom line: if you are just going to snorkel during the day, go with the Canon D10 and save yourself a good chunk of money. If you are planning to dive or night snorkel, then the DS1000 may be the way to go, but expect to experiment/practice with the equipment before you get consistent results.

Ikelite Ultra Compact Housing for Nikon Coolpix S6000 Digital Camera Review

This is a great underwater housing, it got me some lovely pictures and video in Grand Cayman last year. I got the optional red filter, which I HIGHLY recommend if you're going to be diving with this; otherwise you get a lot of blue and not much else. Above about 12 feet you don't need the filter, so if you're a snorkeller only then don't bother. This housing fits snugly, is slightly positive and very easy to manipulate. Only two wishes: one is that the buttons were labelled on the housing: you have to know your camera controls before you go down because you can't see the actual camera buttons once it's inside and two is that I wish there were a hole to accept the filter's leash. That's not a big deal since I just loop it through the wrist tether, but it would be a cool feature. I would buy this camera and this housing again if I dropped them overboard at the Spiegel Grove, not that I'm saying I ever did that....
