Edit: I've now had this recorder over two years and it's still going like a champ. They now have an improved BX1500 model out. Twice a year the thing beeps because it does not initialize the SD card upon start up but turning the key on and off has cleared it each time.

If you don't know, this device is used to record video while you drive your vehicle for accident evidence purposes. One lie and you could be paying thousands of dollars when somebody else is at fault or worse yet be seriously hurt and having an insurance company not living up to its promises.

This review is based on my first impressions after installing, recording, and using the the software to configure and review videos, but not extended use. I will add pertinent information if I feel differently or if the device fails.

I have purchased two of these type of devices in the past. The first one cost 400 dollars and clamped on the rearview mirror. The second was similar to this unit in that it was small and simple with no viewing screen and cost 100 dollars. Buying one of these devices can be quite a pain and disappointment. The first rearview mirror type was good enough, but it weighed so much it ruined my mirror ball and socket mount and essentially would not stay in the up position after about six months. In addition the screen would turn on EVERYTIME I started my car so I was forced to manually turn it off. This became a big pain up until the point that my mirror ball and socket would not hold it up any longer. In addition to these problems the unit's buttons started to stick and basically I blew 400 dollars on a clunky embarrassingly large piece-o-junk. The second 100 dollar unit was made in china and upon taking it apart two weeks after purchase I completely understood why it would not function when the car was hot (90deg day). The inside looked like a mess with low quality workmanship. So at this point I've dropped half a kilobuck and don't have a decent recorder.

At this point I started thinking very deeply about what I wanted in a dash DVR/accident recorder. At first I insisted that it have a screen so I could show the cop at the accident scene, but have since back pedaled on this requirement based on the tradeoffs. I have looked at many of these units and ultimately they either record video files a computer can play (avi's, mp4), record files that software has to be used to review (the smarty black box is like this), and or it has an on-board screen for review. Most of them use removable flash memory. I'll add that the smarty's software allows you to create avi's that both my mac and pc play.

Here is my list of attributes:

1. It must be very small and unobtrusive so it does not block driver visibility and is not obvious from the exterior of the vehicle. Who wants to be the dork with the big bunch of electronics on their dash? Plus many of them will prevent you from using a sun shade. Higher visability = more theft.
2. It must automatically start recording when power is applied (power port or hardwire into fuse box) and not require me to touch it to turn off a screen or start a process.
3. It must overwrite the flash media automatically when it runs out of storage
4. It must warn me if it is malfunctioning (buzzer)
5. It must have a very wide angle lens to maximize field of view (angle you can see)
6. It must be reliable
7. must be able to review files at accident scene
8. Basically I should be able to completely forget that I have this device in my vehicle and only worry about it when its memory card needs replacing and it warns me or I want to look at video.
9. It must be very easy to install and have a reliable mount that does not fall off every other day.

I finally found the smarty black box and it's almost perfect. based on my initial assessment, I would say its size is very manageable with frankly a brilliant mechanical design and mount. It uses what appears to be high performance 3M adhesive tape for mounting and it appears to be VERY sturdy once installed. I'm guessing it's going to stay put, but I'll come back and add edits to the end of the review if it turns out to work poorly. The threaded ring (what you see in the picture is three parts assembled) that holds the body to the mount loosens and allows you to rotate the body (and lens) at very fine increments (small mating teeth in body mate with teeth in mounting ring). The software allows you to configure it to record constantly when powered on or record only an event as indicated by the g-sensor shock or user button push. I want to record constantly. Another reviewer complained that when used on constant record mode (when powered) that it will only do 15 frames per second. I think the reviewer is mistaken to think he/she needs more than 15 frames per second. First of all this is merely an evidence recorder, not a movie recorder to watch on your TV with smooth playback. Since the flash media will eventually need to be replaced due to being overwritten thousands of times, recording at slower frame rate makes the flash memory last longer and reduces costs and hassle. I set mine to 10 frames per second because I think it will provide me with enough video to make my case while not "wearing out" the recorder. It starts recording automatically, it automatically overwrites files if configured with the software to do so, it has a buzzer that indicates an "event" or g-shock (sensitivity is adjustable with software) as well as flash memory failure buzzer, the lens is extreme wide angle....... basically the smarty black box is everything I wanted except I can't review the files on scene.

Considering all the options I think the smarty black box is a poor man's excellent recorder. I recommend this recorder and if you must have the ability to playback video on scene buy a cheap netbook (software only works with windows). All of the other cheaper recorders I have seen fail miserably in multiple areas.

I do agree with another reviewer that the video quality is marginal, but that could be in part due to the fact that the lens is super wide angle which introduces distortion. I would rather have wide angle over less distortion purely for the fact I want to record evidence of what happened, not necessarily confirm a license plate number (it's a trade off). You can not make out a license plate because the video quality resolution/lens is not optimized for detail, rather wide viewing area. The other review's comment on sensor quality has merit, but I think the price and features are optimized. It certainly could use a better lens and sensor, but I'm not sure I want to pay 50% more for that. This is basically a 200-300 dollar recorder that will allow me to say "no I didn't run that light" or "that person swerved out of their lane not me" or "I was not speeding". The nighttime video is below average, but I still defend the configuration as well designed cost/video quality. More frames per second and more resolution means more data and shorter flash memory life.

Keep in mind what you want this device to do and how much you want to pay for it. Sure it would be nice to make out fine details, but for the most part I want a basic evidence recorder that shows my lane position, speed, stop light signal status, the other drivers behavior. If you want a full blow evidence collection system you need a remote mount DVR, several cameras, and lots of installation grief. This device on the other hand is a breeze to install and use, does not tear up your vehicle to install, and stays out of your way while you are driving..... that pretty sweet.

I'm expecting it to be reliable based on external construction/design and software quality, but that's admittedly a guess. If it gives me any problems I'll edit my review.

ASTRO Gaming A30 Audio System, Black - Xbox 360 Review

Astro is a fantastic company to buy from. They boast excellent surround sound tech and headphones as well as a focus on great customer service. I know this personally, as over the summer I purchased their A40 Audio System (White) and have been loving it ever since. You may wonder why I would buy a pair of their A30s since I already own the decidedly more powerful A40s. Well, I'll get to that later, but first, let me just objectively review the A30s as best I can. Whenever deciding whether or not I should purchase pair of headphones as expensive as these, I always appreciated the reviews that went into great detail the most, so I will try to be as informative as I can here for you. Full disclosure, I already own the Mixamp from when I bought my A40 audio system, and I only bought the A30 headphones this time around. That been said, I can tell you from experience about all parts of this package very accurately.

You'll know you've received an Astro product the minute you see the box their stuff is packed in. It's all very slick and reminiscent of an Apple product: modern, artistic, striking, almost zenlike. The Mixamp itself is quite stylish and simplistic, sporting a large knob for volume, a small one for Astro's patented voice/game balance controls, and two buttons, one to turn the system on, and one to activate the 7.1 surround sound. The A30 headphones are gorgeous, and quite different in design from the A40s. It actually reminds me of something you'd see out of 1960's space age comics, such as a space suit component or computer/TV from that era. It's all very, very cool in a sci-fi retro sort of way. The magnetic speaker tags that you attach to the back of each headphone also add to this aesthetic pretty well. I bought the Master Control Panel pair off of Astro's site and they really add to that retro 1960s style.

The build quality of the products is quite sturdy, although without batteries the Mixamp is very light and can be jostled quite easily if you're not careful, which is something you may want to keep in mind. Each headphone on the A30 can swivel to rest comfortably on your shoulder, or to make it more compact for storage in your backpack or the excellently designed zip-up case that comes with the headphones. There's a quick disconnect port for easy transportation. The headphones are extremely light and feel so very comfortable on the head. I have never experienced discomfort wearing these for long periods like I have after wearing the A40s, which is a plus. The audio system comes with every wire you'd ever want or need except the most important for surround sound gaming at home, an optical audio cable, but you can find really good, cheap ones like this one (that I personally use) on Amazon easy enough. Unlike the open-backed A40s, the A30 headphones are actually close-backed, and so by default prevent more sound from leaking in and out from the headphones, which is a huge plus if you're like me and don't want to disturb a sleeping wife/girlfriend next to you.

Now, onto sound. How do the A30s fare in this regard? Frankly, extremely well. To be honest, these have become my go-to headphones for just about everything. In fact, I only get out the A40s on special occasions where I *really* want to hear everything in a game. To be honest, despite being a lot cheaper than the A40s, as well as having 30mm drives in each headphone instead of 40mm like the A40s have, I am loathe to tell the difference. They're both the highest quality you could hope for without going to absurd price heights like other audiophile headphones go to. I have put the A30s through some grueling testing, and they work incredibly well, with everything: video games, music, video, etc, on my computer, from the Mixamp, from my DS, 3DS, on my iPod, these headphones are excellently crafted. Highs, mids, and lows are all distinctive and perfectly balanced, with no aspect overpowering any other. I really am amazed by these A30s. Everything is crystal clear with these headphones. 5-Stars, easily.

Adding to the positives of these headphones is the convenience. The A40s are designed specifically for competitive tournament settings, and for immersion with surround sound experiences at home. They fulfill their purpose wonderfully. The A30s, however, are made for the same things as the A40s, but also one more purpose that the A40s can't really hope to match: multimedia/gaming on the go, portability, and making variety of use a convenience. As I said, you can plug these babies into anything and because of the lightweight, compact design, they're perfect for meeting pretty much any of your headphone needs. You can just as easily and effectively listen to music on the bus with these without drawing attention to yourself, as you could plugging these into your Mixamp at home and enjoying a high fidelity surround sound experience of your favorite console video game. This convenience and easy interchangeability is a benefit that cannot be overstated.

Combine all of this with the Mixamp and you've got yourself one fantastic sound system. I've already tested The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Okami, Halo Anniversary, all of the Mass Effect games, Rayman Origins, as well as others, using these headphones. Whether it was for multiplayer efficiency or just single-player immersion, they all sounded amazing with this A30-Mixamp combo, despite the fact these games were all so different from each other in sound design, genre, and focus. The Mixamp is truly a magical device, with the way it takes audio signals, reworks them, and outputs them to genuinely high-quality 7.1 surround sound, but what's even more surprising to me is that the A30s was able to accurately keep up with the 7.1 surround sound. They did an awesome job tracking the location of everything going on, and keeping the sound accurately portrayed. I also have to say that playing portable games, such as Ocarina of Time 3D, Cave Story 3D, Okamiden, or Radiant Historia (all of which have fantastic sound design and incredible soundtracks) using the A30s and the 3DS/DSiXL yields incredible results as well. One of the biggest focuses of these headphones is for high quality sound with mobile gaming, and I'd say the A30s are hugely successful in that endeavor. The way these headphones provide versatility without sacrificing quality in any way is pretty amazing, really. I am exceedingly impressed.

Long review, I know, but as I said earlier, it was these types of reviews that always helped me when trying to decide on whether or not a particular headphone audio system was for me or not. Despite being cheaper than its big brother A40s, this is still a pricey package, and the big question still remains: is it worth it? My personal opinion is that, if you have the cash to spare or savings meant for something like this, then yes, it is, without a doubt, worth it. I bought these for on-the-go gaming and for (expensive) regular headphone use. I got all of that. What I didn't expect, was that these headphones would actually become my go-to headphones for just about everything. The audio quality is incredible, the build is tough while still being absurdly comfortable, and these headphones boast a level of convenience and ease of use that easily push them over the top in terms of quality and compatibility. Combine them with the magical Mixamp, and you've got one hell of a package! Amazing stuff. Buy it, enjoy it in pretty much every headphone-related situation, and marvel at the sheer quality of this awesome audio system.

BUSH FURNITURE Bush Furniture Napa Small TV Console, Light Cherry Finish Review

I ordered this TV console for my new Sony 46" LCD TV after first comig across it at [...] via a Google search.

The price on Amazon for the same item was $[...] compared to $405 at the other site. Why was I not surprised?!

Was delivered a whole week ahead of estimate - pleasantly surpirsed. The Package is heavy! Weighed 132lbs.

The assembly was straightforward but time consuming and thankfully no missing bolts, screws etc..

One issue I have with this stand is that the back panel has very small openings for wires to go through and there is *zero* access to your A/V equipment connections through the back. You have to be creative and first make your connections to the back of your equipment before you put them on the shelves, push the wires out from the front through the small back panel openings and then place equipment on the shelves and further pull the wires out from the back to connect to the TV or power outlets. Somewhat tricky! I can imagine some cases where this may not be practical but in my case connections worked out eventually (I have a A/V receiver, CD changer, DVD player and DVR sitting on the 4 shelves inside the glass doors).

Second issue is that the right door hinge slots were slightly off and the door grazes against the bottom frame when it is opened and shut. Minor issue but expected better fit from a $[...] TV stand.

Overall looks elegant in my living room though. Might consider buying the companion audio rack downstream.

Update 5/12/2010:
I have now had this for over 2 years and my basic opinion about form, fit and finish has not changed. I added a media center PC that I home built in early 2008 and the following issue regarding the stand's function started playing up: There is a general lack of ventilation inside the cabinet around the shelves - due to the glass shutters in front and the small openings at the back for the wires to come out. Components tend to overheat and certain A/V components are more susceptible than others. While my DVD player, CD changer and A/V receiver and to a lesser extent DVR do not seem to be impacted, my media PC tends to overheat if the door is closed. (It has a temperature indicator on the front of the PC case as well as a console application that came with the motherboard that runs on Windows that play up the issue with heat and throw advance warnings.)
I suppose this could be a general issue with cabinets of this nature that do not have an 'open' design. However, just thought I'd write this down for the benefit of all and maybe for the manufacturer to consider a redesign of the back panel with larger openings.
