DarbeeVision Darblet, HDMI Video Processor Review

This device definitely improves the perceived picture quality from HDMI signals. Everything, especial good quality HD content, looks sharper and more amazing than it did before. Even over the air network broadcasts look great (I do not subscribe to cable or dish but have heard the Darbee doesn't do a whole lot for those since they compress the signal so much that the image quality is sort of bad. Over the air HD is much better quality).

However, the form factor of this device is a bit ugly and cheapy looking. For the price being charged, it should really have a better build quality and nicer design. If you buy this, it's going to be the ugliest device in your system as it's not very 'home theater' like. It looks basically like a USB hub.

More important than looks however, the Darbee Darblet feels EXTREMELY cheap quality and that goes not only for the device itself but also the AC adapter and the remote as well. They are worse quality than what you find on most toys and dollar store items!

Case in point, I went to unplug the AC Adapter and it literally broke and came apart in my hand, leaving the plug part still plugged in and a plastic part in my palm. This is something to watch out for. I have the impression that Darbee tried to get the absolute cheapest components possible for this Darblet device, regardless of quality.

Further, the first unit I received introduced sparkles when playing standard dvds, but looked fine when playing HD with my Panasonic Blu Ray player. Go figure. I exchanged it for another one that is fine.

I also don't like the fact that the device is firmware upgradeable but you have to send it in and pay a fee to have that done if the company releases an update. Not very consumer friendly.

I recommend you use this in line after an equalizing HDMI switcher so you are feeding it a nice clean signal. I use the HDMI switch, 5 in, 1 out, with remote control, Built-in Equalizer, Blue Jeans Cable brand which I can highly recommend. This is one of the better HDMI switches I've tried.

In all I'm very satisfied with the Darbee in terms of what it does for the picture quality, but not with the hardware itself which I feel for the price being charged, could be a lot better.

HRT Music Streamer Pro High Resolution USB D/A Converter Review

Hi, first of all, this is my first and only DAC, so I can't tell you if this DAC is better than FIIO DAC, DACMAGIC or any other. However, I can tell you that the music quality really improve when I begin using this device between my computer and my amplifier. My actual amplifier is a Luxman L-410. 75 watts per channel. A very nice amp, at least for me. So, let me talk about the advantages and disavantages:

Pro:
1) Very nice sound. A really big change from conecting the computer to the amplifier.
2) Very easy setup and configuration.
3) Nice look
4) It works with the electricity from the USB port

Cons:
1) It was hard to get the mini XLR to RCA cable. I had to buy the plugs, the wire and asked for technical help. But at the end, it was cheap and a very good cable.

If you want to listen music from your PC and you have a hi fi amp, I would recomend to buy this DAC. I can't speak about other DAC but this is a very good one.

Onkyo 7.1 HDMI Up Conversion A/V Receiver TXSR674

Onkyo TX-SR674 7.1 Channel Up-Converting A/V Receiver (Black) Review

I bought this at Circuit City for $699, but it was worth it due to the financing offer along with the other equipment I bought along with it (Sony 46" XBR2 LCD TV, Harmony 880 remote, and some other miscellaneous Xmas gifts). You can definitely get it for much less on Amazon.

The performance is quite good. The sound is excellent. The automated speaker sound set up is simple and easy. The video processing is a little difficult to set up, but works well once it is complete. The main reason I got this was to run all my video sources through one machine and only have one cord running up my wall to my flat screen. I hate cords being visible and by converting everything to the HDMI cable, I avoid the usual jumble of cords.

The only cons are that the 674 only up-converts analog to 480i or in some cases 480p. So, other than up-converting the analog signals, it doesn't really up-convert anything else. It only passes along the digital signal at whatever resolution it is recieving it at - if 720p comes in then 720p goes out. As I understand it, this is really all you can do anyway, because up-converting a lower signal to a higher one does not really result in a better picture anyway - it pretty much will be equivalent to whatever the source resolution is.

The other issue is that this receiver is on the HDMI 1.1 format I beleive. Most up to date format is 1.3. Not a huge deal, but the more recent formats pass more signals, for example, SACD audio is not compatible with 1.1, but I think it is with 1.2 and above. Again, not a huge deal for my usage, since I am really using it for DVD and HD satellite and it passes all those signals with no problems. I am waiting to have my Directv HD DVR (HR20 is the model I think) installed in a couple weeks - my expectation is that this signal will pass through the Onkyo with no problems. Will update this comment if any negatives. Otherwise I definitely recommend this receiver.

Nikon Coolpix 3700 3MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

I purchased the Nikon CoolPix 3700 after much research and chose it over the Canon S400. I've been extremely satisfied with the quality of the pictures and videos. This camera was rated #1 Best Buy by PC World and for good reason.Pros:
-rediculously light and very sturdy
-has a long, narrow shape that is more natural in your hand and your pocket as compared with the more square Canon S400 and other Nikon Coolpix cameras
-almost NO SHUTTER LAG, a big plus when photographing people who don't like to hold still for too long.
-EXCELLENT PICTURE QUALITY, 3MP is PLENTY for most uses.
-takes such great videos (with sound) that it might just replace your video camera.
-easy to set up and fairly straightforward menus
-uses SD memory which is generally better than CF.
-pretty good battery life, recharges fast, most users probably won't need an extra battery.
-if you need it, Nikon's tech support line is very helpful (toll-free and 24/7!)Cons:
-Performance in low-light isn't great, but that is the case with most other cameras of this type.
-No case included and only comes with 16MB SD card. A leather case and 256MB SD card will set you back about a hundred bucks. (256MB is the ideal size, I recommend Panasonic SD cards because they record at 10MB/s)
-on/off switch and zoom buttons are awkwardly placed/shaped, should be switched, takes some getting used to.
-included USB cord is a bit fragile, I had to get a replacement from tech support
-3x optical zoom isn't much. If you want a lot of zoom go 10x.Overall a great camera with the best performance in this price range. Highly recommended, it's really a hidden gem. Perfect as a first digicam or for someone who wants to upgrade. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComment
