MSI Raid Micro ATX Motherboard 760GM-E51 Review

I am using a 760GM-E51 board with the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. I purchased them to build an ESXi server.

I was able to successfully install ESXi 4.1 on a USB thumb drive. The onboard NIC isn't supported by default, I used an Intel PCI-E NIC.

I was having issues with very slow boot times of the hypervisor and slow performance in VMs in general.

The console event log was full of messages like these:

cpu4:4100)WARNING: CpuSched: 8825: processor apparently halted for 1836 ms
cpu5:4101)WARNING: CpuSched: 8825: processor apparently halted for 1838 ms
cpu1:4097)WARNING: CpuSched: 8825: processor apparently halted for 2031 ms

This was being caused by C1E support being enabled in the BIOS. Disabling it resolved the performance problems.

To disable C1E Support in the BIOS settings:

-> Advanced BIOS Features
--> CPU Feature
---> C1E Support (set to Disabled)

With C1E enabled Ubuntu Server 10.10 took two hours to install. With it disabled it took six minutes.

With C1E enabled CentOS 5 LiveCD would not boot at all. With it disabled it would boot into the GUI.

With C1E enabled the OpenBSD 4.8 installer had sticky key issues (press a key once and it entered several times). With it disabled it worked properly.

With C1E enabled there were keyboard and mouse performance problems in general. With it disabled these problems disappeared.

I also updated to the latest BIOS (V1.9) during my setup. This may not be necessary.

(A lot of information, I know, but hopefully it will help others avoid spending hours working on this problem like I did)

UPDATE: C1E is supported under ESXi 5.
