I have been a shure fan for a while. I have a home studio, and we record our band on live rehearsals as well as track by track songs for demo tapes. Our Drums are acoustic and I used to mic them with SM57's and a Beta 52 for the kick drum. Overhead and ambiance were recorded with KSM 137. Then I began researching the Beta 98 mics, alongside the new Beta 181, specially for tons, snare and overhead, to get a more crisp, clear and truthful sound of the drums. Today with the latitude of plug ins and sampled sounds you can record with virtually any drum kit and get a professional sound no matter what. But we like to record raw sounds, really more old style classic rock and roll. I use the 98 AD on the snare, to capture the sound from the top. I still use the SM 57 to capture the bottom of the snare drum. The 98 AD gives you that clean, powerful and undistorted sound. It sound brighter than the 98AMP (more on that on my review of the 98AMP). Fits nicely to the ring, is very slim and almost disappear in the middle of the drum set. The only real con I see is the mounting swivel which doesn't come with a rubber fitting on the claw that attaches to the ring (I added myself for preservation of the materials and to decrease vibration transmit ion to the mic). Great buy, improved a lot my snare drum sound when recorded. In time, the mics go into a Mackie 1604 Onyx-i and from there to a Mini Mac running Logic, as my DAW.
