Product Description

The Loupe EX Supporter is a simple and great viewfinder. Already the Varavon Profinder is widely used as THE solution for low angle shooting (still & video) without the need of heavy electronic accessories. Now for the Panasonic GH1/GH2 comes the perfect solution: the Loupe EX Supporter. Have you had problems seeing your LCD screen during outdoor shooting? Probably it's due to the sunlight hitting the screen; the Loupe EX Supporter solves this problem. The Loupe EX Supporter is a viewfinder that does not require a battery. Not only is it light weight, this viewfinder also has 3x magnification with built-in diopter correction. Using an aluminum dial, the Loupe EX Supporter is mounted on the camera. It is easy to mount and dismount because of dialing system (there is a 1/4" hole to allow the camera to still be mounted onto a tripod).

One of the problems with the GH2 is the manual focus. While the camera certainly excels with face tracking and auto focus in well lit situations, when you need manual focus whether for stills or video, the camera becomes difficult especially in fast moving situations like concerts or sports. With the excellent images this camera can produce, it is frustrating to hit a road block like the focus. The focus assist function in the GH2 is good but if your subject is not in dead center, it can slow things down as you search for the subject. The LCD on the GH2 is not very high resolution although the viewfinder is, but keeping your eye on the viewfinder is hard work for video and you can end up with a wet camera from your breath condensation.

The loupe attaches with a study but light metal brace that protects the LCD as it is folded out. By having the loupe to the side of the camera, as opposed to directly in the back like other loupes, you can tilt the loupe up and fasten it in place at any angle the loupe can get to. The loupe also has an adjustable diopter which is a boon for people like me with glasses.

Pros:
Actually makes the camera more stable when hand-held.
Live focusing is easier, especially for video work.
Keeps the sun off of the LCD
The large eyepiece is comfortable for long hours of work.

Cons:
The angles are straight back to about 85 degrees up. It's useless for when the camera is high up on a tripod and you are lower.
The diopter doesn't tighten in place so it's easy to knock out of focus.
It doesn't change the resolution of the LCD but you can learn how to tell when you are in focus.
The HDMI port is essentially blocked although you can manage to get a right angle HDMI cable in there that will limit the loupe to a 20 degree tilt.

Quite frankly, every GH2 should come with this for photographers or videographers.
