2-Wire Video Intercom with One Camera and Two 7" Monitors Review

I was surprised at the lack of options when I started looked for some sort of video door bell/monitor system. After spending months researching different options and eliminating everything I for sure didn't want I settled on this unit. And although I am not disappointed in the unit, especially for the price I paid, I'm not in love with it either.

First the good: It does install easily on an existing 2 wire system (at least one camera, but I'll get into that later). Literally plug the camera unit in where the door bell is right now, and tie the monitor in somewhere down the line. The camera picks up a wide enough view to normally get anyone standing at the door. The volume between the person at the door and the inside unit is plenty loud, and there's no problem understanding conversations. The image (when I've only got one monitor hooked up) is more than adequate. A little grainy, but not bad considering the money I paid. Although I haven't really given it a run through the `night vision' aspect of this is nonexistent (unless mine is broken). Maybe low light assisted, but that's the best I can say with that regard.

The bad: The power connector sticks out further than the back of the unit mounting bracket. This means, that if your wall mounting the monitor and you want it flat you need to `carve' out some space in the wall for the power plug to sit in. I had to basically poke two holes in the wall. One for all the cables to run through (which has to be in the middle of the bracket) and one outside the bracket for the power adapter to rest in. This was beyond frustrating, and was incredibly asinine. Who designs a monitor that is supposed to rest flat on a wall with a power adapter that sticks out an in further than the bracket?

You can push a button and turn the monitor on so you can see what's outside your door. This only turns the camera on and not the microphone so the person at the door shouldn't be able to know you're watching them. The problem? The unit makes a popping/crackling sound when it turns on. It's obvious to the person out there that something is happening.

Regardless of what you think you might read on here (or other sites in regards to units like this) the camera is fixed. And although it offers a good range of view it's limited to the existing level where your door bell currently is (or the level where ever you mount it). I lose the top of someone's head if they're standing anywhere near the camera. The only options would be to mount the camera at an angle or poke a new hole in your wall so you can mount it higher.

Other notes: The camera unit is not a flush mount (at least in the way I was thinking, which this is totally on me not the manufacturer), it's meant to be sunk in the wall. Meaning it's got a metal case that the camera sits in. You cut a hole in your wall (approximately 4" x 6"), mount the bracket inside this hole and then mount the camera in the bracket. It sits `flat' on the wall in the bracket. I did not want to so this so I `sealed' the mounting bracket (it's got a lot of holes in it for options on running the wires in). Then I sprayed it with a dry wall splatter spray to give it some texture. I then painted it with a color that was an acceptable match to the outside of house. Finally I mounted the bracket on the outside of the house instead of counter sinking it.

I've also ran into an issue where when I've got both monitors hooked up the units become almost unusable. I think it's got something to do with the way my existing wiring is. I've bought all new wire, and plan on running it between both units and the master unit and the door bell camera. I've got a feeling this will help correct my issues. I'll update once I've got it done either way. With this issue I haven't been able to test out the intercom.

So if I could give this 3.5 stars I would. The price was right, and I was really just looking for a way for my wife to look outside without letting someone know she's there (or tell a salesman she's not interested without opening the door). On that regard this unit is a success.

Edit (9/7/12): I ran the new wire and it cleared up all the viewing issues. So now I can see who's at the door with equal clarity on either monitor. I tested the intercom system once, it was 'clunky' at best and I don't live in the Southfork Ranch so it would just be easier to call for my wife/kids than go through the steps of activating it. Definitely an option I will never use.

Edit (10/18/12): When looking through some old reviews I noticed the picture of this unit has changed. The outside doorbell/camera unit looks as though it has changed. It now actually looks a lot better than the unit I ordered, and I would have much preferred this one. This unit looks like it "flush" mounts to the house instead of being counter sunk. It also appears to be a little longer, possibly giving more room to move the camera higher and still cover the existing doorbell hole. This is pure speculation based on the image, but it appears to be an improvement.
