These 500 LED uses 500 ultra bright, 5500K LED's and has an equivalent output of 500 watts of incandescent light yet draws about 50 watts. The 5500K daylight balanced LEDs offer a full spectrum, beautifully soft light.LED lights off significantly further "throw" than a comparable fluorescent light. This is because each of the 500 LED lights has a 30 degree beam angle lens that directs light forward. This beam angle creates a beam pattern that is useful from 1 - 15 feet.LED lights are ideal for location work because they are virtually shockproof and offer the brightest light in the smallest form factor.

These lights have worked well for several weeks for me and provide all the light necessary for me to shoot videos with my Canon EOS 5D II. I have shot in a dimly lit environment and near to a large glass window in daylight. I have used one light as a backlight and another as the key light. In each case I have found the results satisfactory.

The light kit arrives in a single box and was well protected. The kit comprises two stands, two lights, and two power cords. The power cords are 4 m long so most times you can plug them into a close power outlet. Power consumption is minimal so if you want to plug multiple devices into a single circuit or off an extension cord you don't have to worry about overloading the circuit as you might with multiple halogen lights. The accompanying documentation indicates the lights operate on 110 Vac and 220 Vac, though I didn't try that and there is no confirmation on the back of the unit. The unit does have a standard power receptacle with a replaceable fuse and each light is supplied with two spare fuses.

You can mount the lights horizontally or vertically and switching from one to the other is quick. This matters when you are close to a person and want the face fully lit. The panel is wide enough that the light is diffused for facial shots so that you don't need any extra diffusion to obtain good lighting (you don't get harsh unflattering shadows).

There are switches to turn on and off rows of LEDs. This allows you to dim the lights in an even manner while at the same time obtaining the diffused light source. However, so far I've not found it necessary to dim the lights and have just moved the light stand further back. I checked the white balance using a grey card and found it to be very close to daylight.

The stands themselves are rugged enough for these or heavier lights. Although the lights are rugged, you do need to organize some means of storing and carrying them.

If you plan to use these for still photography, you might want more or brighter lights. Personally, I shall continue to use flash for still pictures to obtain the necessary sharpness. For video use, however, and comparing the price of these against other LED lights, I think this is a very good buy.
