Bushnell Banner 6-24x40 Matte MD Review

I have had this scope for several years. It has spent its life mounted on a savage Mark 2 BTV, which is a heavy barreled .22 lr. It is the most accurate rifle I own at 50 yards, and one of the most accurate rifles I have ever seen group first hand. With Aguila Golden Eagle Match rifle I get 10-shot groups around .25" at 50 yards on a very consistent basis. These kind of groups are just not going to be possible without a quality optic (unless you are an olympic-level shooter with aperture sights), and the Bushnell is just that. It is bright and crisp enough to see .22 caliber holes out to about 150 yards on a sunny day. The mil-dot reticle is correctly set up from the factory to range at 12x, however, I often range at 24x and then get the correct distance by doubling my result. The higher the magnification, the more easily accurate measurements can be made. The optics are bright, cut glare well, and the glass delivers a sharp picture. The image is a bit dark at 24x when compared to a lower powered scope, but that is to be expected with high magnification. It also has a small exit pupil at 24x, making eye position crucial, but this is just a factor of objective diameter divided by magnification, so any 40mm scope at 24x will have the same size exit pupil, regardless of pedigree or price. All target scopes of high magnification will behave similarly. The image is still plenty bright for daytime target shooting, and gives me no issues. You can always back the magnification down and enjoy very bright images.

The only downside to this scope is that it is very long and heavy, but you should expect that when you are looking at a high powered variable scope for target shooting or long-range hunting. I would also have liked the crosshairs to be just a little bit thinner, but I doubt it would shrink my groups by any measurable margin.

The Banner line is a great one for the money, and I own several different models, all on .22 lr rifles. They all deliver as they should and I have had no issues, even when mounting them on magnum-level spring-piston air rifles. They hold zero, and the optics are of great quality for the price.

Having a 40mm objective, most rifles will accept this scope using low to medium rings so that a good cheek weld can be maintained. If you have an adjustable comb or a very high comb rifle stock and you don't need a mil-dot reticle or magnification beyond 18x, I would recommend the banner 6-18x50 instead. It has slightly thinner crosshairs and it is brighter and clearer at equivalent magnification levels. It will require high to very high rings though, and if you are putting it on most rifles, it will be very high above bore-line and not offer much of a cheek weld, if any at all. If you are putting a scope on a rifle that has no raised cheek piece or a very low comb, and you don't need magnification beyond 10x, I highly recommend the super banner 3.5-10x36. It still offers an adjustable objective (just like the other two I mentioned), a bullet drop compensation turret, a bit more magnification than your average 3-9x32, and a brighter image than I have ever seen in a 32mm objective scope. It will also mount in low rings on almost any rifle, and will be about as close to the bore line as possible, making an adequate cheek weld attainable on most hunting type rifles.

So, if you need a great high powered target scope and you are on a budget, this is about the most bang for your buck that is available.
