This shredder performs reasonably well -- it cuts paper, the safety features work as advertised, and there have been no problems with the electronics or the motor and cutter. What's frustrating is the interior of the removable canister. You cannot put a plastic trash bag in there that will not be sliced open by the sharp protrusions inside when you pull the bag out. The chief culprit is the mounting hardware for the clear plastic view port (so that you can see the level of clippings inside the canister). If you don't use a plastic trash bag, you won't have this problem, but you will then have the problem of emptying the canister without spillage (a problem that depends on what you empty the canister into -- I use a large public recycling dumpster with narrow openings high on the sides, and it's not possible to not spill). Fellowes seems to have envisioned that most people will use a plastic trash bag, because there are hooks inside the canister for holding it in place. If so, then why did they not realize that sharp interior hardware would rip the bag, letting snips of paper scatter themselves about, to be picked up later from inside the body of the machine and also off the carpeting? A lot of thought went into making the machine jam proof and child proof (if you touch the paper slot at the top with your hand, shredding stops), but not enough thought went into elementary design.
