Impressions and praise ... I am in awe of the ATH-CK100: understated in design, sturdy in build and an enduring testament to brand Japan. Let's just say it: it is beautiful. The dual-armature CK10 earns its universal appeal with mids and treble that sparkle. By contrast, the triple-armature and Titanium-encased CK100 is mercilessly revelatory and gloriously unforgiving. The expansive mid-range throws light on shadows the predecessor CK10 only glimpses. Separation of instruments is unmatched. Strong vocals, when present, are upfront. The additional detail and layers imbue the CK100 with a consummate intimacy. This is surely double-edged: that the CK100 bares so much can annoy, even shock. The results are by turns exhilarating and disquieting - the self-confident CK100 almost seems to demand that the source live up to its terms, not the other way around. The blockbuster Bollywood soundtrack Dostana (2008) stayed on my iPod playlist for months, thanks to the CK10. With the CK100, I might as well swipe it into the trash bin (Apple's upcoming OS 4.3 may even allow such ease). What you "see" now are wide swaths of electronica flooding the foreground, bludgeoning thin vocals into dance-floor submission. The compilation is over-produced dreck: appropriate perhaps for an Ambani wedding in Mumbai, but unsuitable for a sentient being. Walker makes dissonance harmonious, and the CK100 paid apt tribute to his atonal precisions every step of the way. I was exhilarated. A smile is also not far away when you take off these IEMs (worn over the ear): the Titanium buds tend to clink together like marbles - or Champagne glasses, a fitting finale to the CK100's aural pleasures. The Soma of CK10 or the somatic perfection of CK100? The either/or is, of course, a head-fake. The CK10 is your friend, the CK100 your mentor, if you dare.
